ABOUT THE JOURNAL
Stories with a
reference trail.
Sanatan Heritage is an illustrated introduction to Sanatan Dharma: its ideas, divine forms, sacred texts and stories. It offers starting points for curious readers and families.
Our purpose
Help readers move from a question to a story, then to its wider textual and devotional setting. The site offers introductory explanations and condensed English retellings, alongside links for further reading.
Sources and editions
Story cards and readers link to the central Sources & References page. References name texts, editions and chapter or verse locations where available. A retelling condenses its source; it is not a complete translation. The referenced text remains the place to examine the fuller account.
Translations and commentaries reflect the perspectives of their authors and traditions. Introductory sources, primary texts and editorial reflections have different roles.
Different traditions
Hindu traditions preserve many tellings and interpretations. A reader identifies the account it follows rather than silently merging versions. Tradition notes and comparisons on the Sources page help make these distinctions visible. Reflection questions are editorial invitations, not quotations from scripture.
Images and pronunciation
Captions identify contributed photographs, devotional artwork and AI-generated illustrations. Illustrations are interpretations of a story or setting; they are not evidence of historical appearance, an exact temple plan or a prescribed ritual. Unidentified photographs remain unidentified.
Each narrative image has one visible placement. The shared site logo is repeated as branding. Glossary listening uses approximate browser speech, as labelled beside the written pronunciation hints.
Suggest a correction
A useful correction names the page, quotes the short passage in question, explains the proposed change and includes a source with an edition and chapter or verse reference. For an image, identify the subject and the specific detail that needs attention.
Send your note through Contact & corrections, or email shreembala@gmail.com. The project repository on GitHub also accepts contributions. Please keep private book scans and personal information out of public contributions.
Your reading preferences
Saved stories, bookmarks, reading-path completion, text size and theme preference are kept in this browser. They do not create an account or sync between devices. You can remove a story, export or import a backup, or clear reading history in your reading library. Reading preferences & privacy explains optional speech, storage and contact links.
